Nature of Work
Paraprofessional responsibility for support of Library’s services for children, birth through 12th grade.
This position involves working directly with children and young adults and their parents or caregivers.
This position performing technical library services to patrons that includes a range of informational services, including reference, readers, advisory and programing.
Work is performed under the direction of the Youth Services Librarian.
Essential Functions of Work Staffs Kids Place Assisting patrons in making effective use of library Providing readers advisory services for library patrons Training users on procedures, policies, use of computer and related areas Answering patron reference questions Assisting patrons to use to the library catalog, library databases, MontanaLibrary2Go and other internet resources to retrieve materials and information Documenting service statistics 2.
Assists in the implementation of programing for children from birth through 18 years of age Assisting in the planning, organizing, purchasing supplies for and presenting weekly Story Time Assisting in the planning, organizing, purchasing supplies for and presenting weekly Toddler Time Assisting in the planning, organizing, purchasing supplies for and presenting Young Adult Programing Assisting in the planning, organizing, purchasing supplies for and presenting the annual Summer Reading program Assisting in the planning, organizing, purchasing supplies for and installing monthly Story Walks in Gibson Park Assisting in developing and implementing other programing to engage the Great Falls Community Creating flyers and promotional materials Conducting routine clerical activities as requested by library staff 3.
Contributes to making the Great Falls Public Library environment welcoming and inviting place Shelving and shifting Library materials as needed Collaborates with volunteers to achieve Department goals Ensuring that Library public spaces are organized and stocked appropriately Making displays Enforcing Great Falls Public Library policies (including behavior policies, computer use policies and materials policies) 4.
Supports the development of the Great Falls Public Library Collection Creating orders/short records in SIRSI Repairing Library materials Under the direction of the Youth Services Librarian, weeding and discarding Library materials Reviewing Collection Development resources and making suggestions as appropriate Under the direction of the Youth Services Librarian, creating carts in vendor interfaces Creating reports and informational materials as requested 5.
Participates in the professional development of self and others.
Participates in committees and professional organizations as appropriate.
Education and Experience Combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma and two years of college-level coursework in library science or a related field.
Two years of experience within a library setting.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS Candidate must possess or have the ability to obtain valid Montana driver’s license.
Requirements of Work Working knowledge of the principles and practices of library operations.
Working knowledge of existing standard reference and bibliographical resources.
Ability to establish positive working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and the general public.
Knowledge of the library’s policies, procedures and practices Ability to work well with children and families Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing Maintains files in orderly and efficient manner Deals tactfully, respectfully and effectively with patrons and staff Genuinely likes children, is comfortable with them, and enjoys serving them Compiles requested materials, lists, statistics and related information quickly and accurately Effectively promotes enthusiasm for library services Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisor, patrons and the public Knowledge of and appreciation for children’s literature.
Understands and values the role of the library in the community Work must be neat accurate and appealing to patrons CORE COMPETENCIES Library Service Customer Service Cash Handling Conflict Resolution Communication Skills Organizational Skills SUPERVISION This position does not supervise other employees.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is performed in a library environment PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, pinch, grasp, reach, pull and perform similar body movements.
Must have the ability to perform moderate physical work and to lift and carry up to 50 pounds at a time; the possession of hand/eye coordination sufficient to operate a computer, typewriter, microfilm reader, printer and copier; the ability to talk and hear in person or by telephone; and the ability to see and read materials.
EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK The work schedule is a 29-hour, five-day work week, Sunday through Saturday.
Schedule will vary and will include evenings and weekends.
This position is a non- exempt position and is eligible for overtime, with pre-approval by the Youth Services Librarian or other supervisory staff.
TRAVEL Travel is primarily local during the business day.
Occasional travel may be required to attend off-site training and educational opportunities.
